Comprehensive Renovation Nuremberg–Regensburg: Works Started

09.02.2026

On February 6, 2026, at 9 PM, the comprehensive renovation of the high-performance corridor Nuremberg–Regensburg began. With the shutdown of the overhead lines, the first construction works started.

During the upcoming five-month full closure, extensive measures will be implemented in this section of the route. The goal of the comprehensive renovation is to sustainably improve the performance, reliability, and future viability of the route.

Importance of the Route

The approximately 88-kilometer connection between Nuremberg and Regensburg is one of the busiest railway lines in Bavaria, with more than 350 trains per day. Furthermore, it is part of the European transport axis Rhine–Danube and holds a central significance for national and cross-border rail traffic, especially towards Austria.

Measures in the Construction Section Nuremberg–Neumarkt

As part of the comprehensive renovation, the following works will be carried out in the construction section Nuremberg–Neumarkt:

  • Renewal of the track bed including ballast cleaning over 24 km

  • Improvement of the track formation over 15.7 km

  • Cable trenching (new and reconstruction) over approximately 29 km

  • Renewal of the overhead line over 11.7 km

  • Renovation of three stops

  • Construction of a new pedestrian underpass

The measures create the foundation for a high-performance, safe, and modern rail transport.
