New cycling path north of Laufen near Bubenberg will be finished soon

15.06.2022

Construction work on the B20 continues with traffic light regulation

The construction work along the B20 for the new pedestrian and cycling path between Höfen and Bubenberg north of Laufen is entering its final phase. While maintaining traffic on the federal highway, the retaining wall for securing the adjacent slope and the drainage facilities are currently being constructed. All work is expected to be completed by the end of July, and the pedestrian and cycling path will be opened for pedestrians and cyclists. The federal government is investing about 800,000 EURO in the traffic safety of the more vulnerable road users, especially as the use of bicycles in everyday life is becoming increasingly attractive even in rural areas.

“Finally, something is happening,” many cyclists and pedestrians between Fridolfing and Laufen might be saying, who have already used the relatively well-developed cycling network between the two districts along the heavily trafficked federal highway B20. However, until now, they had to take a detour via the municipal road through the districts of Erlach and Höfen between Bubenberg and Höfen. Now this gap is being closed as the penultimate section of the overall route between Fridolfing and Laufen. In the coming years, it will still be a challenge to realize the underpass at Lebenau. The State Building Authority in Traunstein has been working with the affected municipalities and districts for over 20 years to create a continuous cycling network along the B20. Especially in recent months, discussions about the increased burden from truck traffic on this main connecting road between the A94 with the Burghausen area and the A8 with the cities of Bad Reichenhall, Freilassing, and Salzburg have confirmed the importance of a traffic-safe cycling network.

The construction workers on the site of the new pedestrian and cycling path can perceive the enormous traffic load on the B20 day by day, especially with the large share of heavy trucks. The project is expected to be put into operation by the end of July.
