Successful switch reconstruction in Nürnberg Reichswald

20.05.2025

On route 5963, a comprehensive switch reconstruction was carried out at the Nürnberg Reichswald junction using conventional methods. The work took place around the clock and was completed on schedule despite logistical and safety challenges.

As part of the measure, a total of four switches (2 x 1,200 and 2 x 2,500) were renewed. The switches were delivered pre-assembled on switch transport wagons (WTW) – two of them could be directly placed from the WTW into the prepared track bed, while two others were initially stored and later installed. Additionally, a rail replacement was carried out over 320 meters of track. To ensure safe access to the construction site, access paths were created.

Processing of:

  • 1,490 m of new rail
  • 470 pieces of B90 new sleepers
  • approximately 2,500 t of new ballast
  • 25 t of crushed sand
  • 108 SKV welds

The construction site was partially in an island location, which particularly in the first construction phase required a secure crossing of a busy S-Bahn line. Access to the construction site was ensured through solid barriers and security personnel.

Furthermore, the adjacent tracks were in operation throughout the entire measure. The limited distance of only 7.5 to 9 meters to the neighboring track posed a challenge, especially during the unloading of the WTW, which the team managed with great care and professionalism.

The measure was successfully implemented under complex conditions. A big thank you to all involved for their dedicated efforts and the safe, timely execution!
