SWIETELSKY Germany renovates motorway during night shifts

07.12.2022

The Swietelsky Construction Company Germany, headquartered in Traunstein with a branch in Rosenheim, was awarded the contract at the end of September this year for the phased renovation of the A8 East motorway in the South Bavarian region by the Federal Motorway Company. The contract is set for 1.5 years.

The main works include the phased renovation of the individual lanes on the motorway during night shifts. Part of the asphalt construction takes place under live traffic with the removal of two lanes. Traffic can thus be guided unhindered past the shoulder. In one night shift, approximately 3,400 m² of asphalt with a thickness of 12 cm is removed, while simultaneously 10 cm of continuously graded asphalt binder and 2 cm of thin-layer surface are installed using the in-house spray paver. The major challenge is the coordination of the large number of trucks, two large milling machines, and three street sweepers, ensuring a smooth removal and installation process. This is ensured by two site managers from the Rosenheim branch. The asphalt work must be completed on time within a period of 10 hours according to the construction contract. The good weather of the last two weeks has been optimally utilized, and the first 8 night shifts have already been carried out before the well-deserved winter break – the work will continue in spring 2023. In total, the contract includes approximately 50 individual nights and various smaller earthworks, such as the renovation of five rainwater retention basins in the area of the motorway.
