At the beginning of November, the extensive rehabilitation works at the Hoische Weir near Gröditz were successfully completed. The structure, located close to the B169 between Tiefenau and Gröditz, plays a key role in distributing water between the Geißlitz and the Grödel–Elsterwerda Raft Canal, which converge at this point.

Project timeline
The project began in May 2022 and lasted two and a half years until its successful completion. The aim was to ensure the weir’s long-term functionality while also meeting heritage conservation requirements.

Background
The original weir dated back to the 19th century and was listed as a historic monument. In recent years, however, it had been severely damaged by recurring flood events. For this reason, a replacement structure was built on the same site, designed to comply both with modern water management requirements and with heritage protection regulations.

Technical implementation
Specialist geotechnical methods from the Meißen branch were used for execution:

  • Drilling with a diameter of 900 mm to depths of up to 14.50 m
  • Installation of sheet pile walls with lengths of up to 14.50 m

These measures ensure the weir’s long-term operational performance. The rehabilitation sustainably strengthens the region’s water management infrastructure and contributes to improved safety during flood events.
